The type of reel and how the reel is installed vary greatly depending on the customer and the application for the hose or cable reel. It is therefore very important to confirm some factors before installing a reel on a truck. When mounting a hose reel, the fleet to be serviced should be analyzed to help determine what fluids are to be carried on the truck.
The fluids can be water, lubes, or oils, and this helps first determine what type of hose reel would be mounted onto the truck. The second factor is the climate that the truck would be driven in. If the climate is really hot or really cold, hose reels would need additional heating or cooling equipment to ensure that the fluids in use stay at a suitable temperature.
It is also important to consider whether the fluid is corrosive as this will heavily impact the type of materials used in the hose reel. For both hose and cable reels, other environmental conditions should also be considered. For example, if the reel is exposed to moist environments, the reel, or any metal cables on the reel, could be vulnerable to rusting or deterioration.
Again these damaging effects can be avoided by using different materials which can withstand or prevent corrosion, rusting, chipping, and fading. Since truck mounted reels will frequently be exposed to contaminants in the field, they should also be equipped with a weatherproof enclosed spring canister which will keep moisture and dirt from collecting inside the reel. These precautions will ultimately lead to a reel that performs exceptionally in your applications.
The cable or hose reel can be mounted on the vehicle in a variety of ways depending on user preference and the intended application, but they are usually mounted on the rear of the truck. If a hand held system is to be used, a bracket should be provided to make sure the reel is secure during transport.
If more than one reel is placed on the vehicle, there should be adequate spacing between them to provide easy access and to allow for the removal of the reels should maintenance be required. For hose reels, the diameter of the hose being installed should be determined based on flow rate requirements, and the hose should be able to accommodate the working pressure for whatever is being dispensed.
A four-way valve could also be considered for used fluid evacuation. This valve allows the fluid to be extracted from the vehicle being serviced and can be reversed to the empty tank for proper disposal. Considering all these factors before purchasing should allow for many years of service.
